SUMMARY:Introducing the Kansas City Metro Area Zoning Atlas
DESCRIPTION:The Kansas City metro is now on the National Zoning Atlas! We’re excited to be part of this regional effort alongside Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City\, Mid-America Regional Council\, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law\, and the National Zoning Atlas. With 212 local jurisdictions\, 14 counties\, and two states\, the KC metro offers a unique look at how zoning shapes where and what types of housing can be built—and ultimately\, who has access to housing opportunities across our region. \nJoin us Tuesday\, September 1 at 11 a.m. CT for a webinar exploring the new KC Metro Zoning Atlas. We’ll walk through the interactive tools\, share how the data was collected and analyzed\, and debut new research on regional zoning and demographic trends. \nWe’re proud to help bring this important data and conversation to our region.\nRegister now

SUMMARY:Making a Great City Series - William Fulton
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 series focuses on housing as economic development\, helping to strengthen fiscal stability and reduce disparities in wealth. This engaging series will guide all Kansas Citians – whether city leaders\, place managers\, neighbors\, or engaged citizens – to reach the goal of Making Kansas City a Great City. \nWith few exceptions\, cities and towns are not created accidentally. Instead\, urban planning expert William Fulton suggests that they exist to further a political or economic agenda. But making a better city — or even a really great one — takes intention. His essays in Place and Prosperity: How Cities Help Us to Connect and Innovate show how\, over time\, a successful place creates enduring economic assets. \nFulton discusses how when conscious thought is put into everything from the layout of roads to the relationships of built environments\, cities can be engines of prosperity. He explains how the ideas of place and prosperity are at the heart of what a city is and\, by extension\, what our society is all about. \nFulton is one of America’s thought leaders on land use and both economic and urban development. In California\, he served as the mayor of Ventura and the planning director for the city of San Diego and\, in Texas\, as the head of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University in Houston. He’s currently a professor of practice in Urban Studies and Planning at the University of California San Diego.
